Summer Vibes Competition

Postby lothario » Mon May 09, 2011 3:19 pm

Yup, a quick competition for the summer. The deadline is in less than 2 months, so start cracking those tunes.

Again, what are samples exactly? You mean I can't even use drum samples from an online sample pack? I have to go to the kitchen and record myself hitting pots and pans?

I think in this instance it means something like "a copyrighted segment of music".

Ish.

Honestly, the "No Samples" rule is generally meant to encourage artists to create original sounds themselves, and perhaps risk recording their own voices, and in best case learning from that experience. When samples are allowed, people tend to use LOADS of samples, and I try to avoid that over-use by saying 'No Samples'.

Consider me lenient on sample usage under the No Samples rule. There are no problems using breakbeat samples, chopped up rhythms or small shouts and vocal snippets. Just avoid complete vocal verses or blatant sampling (a la Bass Fucker in the last competition). Using Prodigy as an example, I would disallow Stand Up (if we pretend they didn't own the sample) but allow Break & Enter.

Remember, we're here to have fun, and I'm not going to ruin the fun by being overly strict.
